Abstract

Introduction. Mathematics teaching in basic general education in Ecuador faces various challenges related to understanding symbols, abstract concepts, low student motivation, and the predominance of memorization-based methodologies. Digital tools, such as Polypad (originally developed by Mathigon and currently part of Amplify), have emerged as tools to encourage and promote observation, exploration, and active learning. Objective. To evaluate the educational impact of using Polypad in learning mathematical operations with algebraic expressions in eighth-grade students at a school in Cuenca, Ecuador. Methodology. A quasi-experimental design with a mixed approach (pre-test/intervention/post-test) was applied, which was complemented by a survey, structured observation, and interviews with teachers. Sixty-eight students from two parallel classes participated in the procedure (Parallel A = 35 students; Parallel B = 33 students). The intervention consisted of five sessions with digital tool activities (use of Polypad for teaching algebraic expressions). Results. The improvements in performance were significantly positive. An example of this is given in parallel A, which went from an average of 5.83/10 to 8.45/10, representing an increase of 2.62 points, while parallel B went from an average of 5.10/10 to 6.24/10, demonstrating an increase of 1.14 points. For both parallels, increases in the understanding of exercises with algebraic expressions were observed. In addition, students expressed high motivation and preference for these collaborative activities with technology, and teachers also pointed out advantages in the use of these digital tools. Conclusion. The use of Polypad promoted active learning, improved performance, and strengthened student comprehension. However, its integration requires teacher training, adequate infrastructure, and educational policies that facilitate its accessibility. General area of study: Education. Specific area of study: Mathematics teaching. Type of study: Original articles.
