Analysis of the geostrategic importance of the South Atlantic. The Falklands case
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the 21st century the South Atlantic is an area of great relevance in the geopolitical context where it is framed. Interest in it exceeds the geographical limits imposed by its coastal countries between the Ecuador Line and the Antarctic continent. Multiple interests are in place of this part of the globe, both from States parties to the "South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone" and from foreign powers. Among the latter it is essential to mention the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which maintains occupied a number of strategic territories in this geographical area, in particular the usurped territory of the Falkland Islands, Georgia and the Sandwich of the South. It should be noted that these territories are the most precious in the South Atlantic in that they concentrate a large amount of highly demanded natural resources and their position is vital for any kind of control over the region and other neighboring regions. The aspirations of the United Kingdom, which to this day remains as the administering power of the above-mentioned Non-Self-Governing Territories, have been uncretudelly incretulating since the end of the Falklands War. Britain today maintains the Falklands as its most important possessions in Latin America in line with its imperialist policy.
